However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I became interested in expressing the plight of others who have demonstrated great courage in the face of adversity. In particular, I was drawn to the stories of healthcare workers and the impact of the pandemic on the individual and our global village. During this time, I also witnessed the intersection of two pandemics: COVID-19 and racism. 2020 saw a rash of protests arise against racial oppression and brutality. Many of my portraits reflect this racial reckoning and combine images from both a historical and contemporary context. Other pieces in my collection depict social justice issues, celebrate stories of courage and excellence, and the healing power of canyons. Prior to the pandemic, most of my paintings I created were self-portraits and illustrate the internal strife I have suppressed since my childhood in regards to the loss of my mother at an early age and the anxiety that developed in my latter years. Being in lockdown again carries an emotional weight that is difficult to manage. Even though there is now a vaccine within reach, the light at the end of the tunnel sometimes seems far-reaching. But, I still have hope… I have to. When I saw the photo taken by Nicole DeLoach Hubbard, the chief nurse anesthetist at a hospital in Tampa, Florida, I knew I had my inspiration for my painting, “For Better or For Worse”. He was one of the original “big six” civil rights leaders and helped organize the March on Washington in 1963 alongside Martin Luther King Jr. He was also one of the original13 freedom riders that fought to desegregate buses in the Southern States. This little boy was at a protest in Atlanta, Georgia, sparked by the death of George Floyd. While his blue mask covers most of his face, his eyes capture the innocence, determination, and hope of a new generation of freedom fighters. With his fist in the air and the police officer with his riot shield behind him, he poignantly captures the call for racial justice and solidarity. I painted myself in the middle of a cracked desert to symbolize how isolating mental exhaustion can be. To deal with anxiety and overthinking on a daily basis is both physically and mentally draining. The cracks in the desert reflect the cracks in the facade that many people who struggle with mental health have to carefully construct to conceal the battle that they are in with their minds. The ruminating thoughts that accompany generalized anxiety disorder can be very debilitating. The stress that these unrelenting thoughts bring make me feel like my body is going to crack. Looking at the majesty of the canyons gave me an incredible sense of peace and comfort, so I knew that this environment was perfect for the subject of my painting. The woman curled up on the rock is the focal point of the painting and she represents someone who is in a moment of reprieve. She is alone in the canyon, but not lonely. This difference is key: her aloneness is not veiled in sadness but more in peaceful solitude. Her body is not in a tight fetal position, but reflects a more relaxed state of someone who is in a moment of quiet awakening. She gently brushes her hair back from falling on her face and her other arm cups the cascade or red hair dipping into the flooded canyon. The long waves of hair create eye flow and lead the viewer’s eye down to the rich colours of the canyon reflected in the water. The water that has collected in the bottom of the canyon is an important element of the painting because it reinforces the serene spirit of the woman. And since this discovery, more Indigneous bodies have been found: 751 at the Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan and 182 at St. Eugene’s Mission residential school in B.C. From the 19th century until the last school closed in 1995, more than 150 000 Indigenous children were forced to attend these government-funded residential schools to forcibly assimilate them into Canadian society. During their time at these schools, Indigenous children suffered emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and many died from this abuse, neglect, disease and other causes. She has served in this role for the last two years and was recognized by tribal chiefs at a young age as a water advocate and given the title “water protector” for speaking out about the lack of universal access to water in Indigenous communities.
