ARTIST STATEMENT:

My body of artwork centres around portraiture, in particular self-portraits, and explores my journey dealing with grief, loss, and anxiety.  However, during this COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a decisive shift from portraying myself to capturing others’ personal stories, struggles, and triumphs.  I became interested in expressing the plight of healthcare workers.  I also witnessed the intersection of two pandemics:  COVID-19 and racism.  I wanted to portray the racial injustices experienced by so many and express the individual stories of those whose voices were silenced and continue to be silenced by oppressive hands.  In short, I am drawn to portraiture because it allows me to channel the voices, emotions, and stories of people with an immediacy and rawness that I can only achieve through paint.
